Mega Evolution is a combat-only transformation introduced in Pokemon X and Y. When a compatible Pokemon holds its species-specific Mega Stone, its trainer can activate Mega Evolution once per battle, temporarily boosting stats, changing typing, and sometimes gaining a new ability.
How It Works
Mega Evolution lasts only for the duration of a single battle. After the fight ends, the Pokemon reverts to its normal form. You are allowed exactly one Mega Evolution per battle across your entire team — choosing which Pokemon to Mega is a strategic decision that shapes your whole game plan.
Which Pokemon Can Mega Evolve?
The original Mega line-up includes Charizard X, Charizard Y, Blastoise, Venusaur, Mewtwo X, Mewtwo Y, Lucario, Garchomp, Gardevoir, Absol, Gengar, Alakazam, Gyarados, and Scizor. Some Pokemon like Charizard and Mewtwo have two distinct Mega forms with different typings and playstyles.
Stat Boosts and Typing Changes
Mega Charizard X becomes Fire/Dragon with massive physical attack, while Mega Charizard Y stays Fire/Flying but gains huge special attack and the Drought ability. These aren't small upgrades — Mega forms typically gain +100 Base Stat Total, turning already-strong Pokemon into wallbreakers.
Mega Evolution in Competitive Play
Because Mega forms are so powerful, many competitive formats regulate them. Mega Rayquaza is banned in nearly every tier. Mega Kangaskhan and Mega Salamence historically dominated Ubers for the same reason. In Pokeworld, Mega Evolution is allowed in wild battles and PvP, so start collecting stones early.
