Pokemon Natures Explained — How They Affect Stats

Every Pokemon has a Nature, assigned randomly at birth. Out of 25 possible Natures, 20 of them increase one stat by 10% while lowering another stat by 10%. The remaining 5 are "neutral" Natures that don\'t change anything. Picking the right Nature is critical for high-level play.

How Natures Work Mathematically

A +10%/-10% shift sounds small, but at level 100 it translates to roughly 30-40 stat points difference. A Jolteon with a Timid nature (+Speed, -Attack) will outspeed almost every other Pokemon — but a Jolteon with Brave nature (+Attack, -Speed) is painfully slow and hits no harder.

The Best Natures for Each Role

  • Physical Sweepers: Adamant (+Attack, -Sp.Atk) or Jolly (+Speed, -Sp.Atk)
  • Special Sweepers: Modest (+Sp.Atk, -Attack) or Timid (+Speed, -Attack)
  • Walls: Bold (+Defense, -Attack) or Calm (+Sp.Def, -Attack)
  • Mixed Attackers: Rash, Naive, Lonely, Hasty

Neutral Natures

Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky do nothing. A neutral Nature isn\'t bad, but if you\'re breeding for competitive use you want a Nature that actively helps.

Changing Natures

In the main series, Nature Mints can change a Pokemon\'s effective Nature without affecting its true Nature. In Pokeworld, Natures are fixed at capture, so you\'ll want to re-catch if you pull a bad one for the species. Use the Synchronize ability from a leading Pokemon to boost the chance that wild encounters match the Nature you want.
